Free Family Healthy Living Sessions for schools

Active Clubs Experience (ACE) is a well-established Health for All Service offering children opportunties to get active and have fun at interactive and energetic multisports afterschool clubs. They have teamed up with Change4Life in Leeds to offer fun learning opportunities for all the family.

Now parents can join in the fun too!

We are offering your school the opportunity to get involved in FREE sessions funded by Public Health Leeds, where families can take part in
healthy cooking, physical activity, receive healthy living advice and participate in fun Change4Life challenges.

We know the amazing work that happens already in your school to promote healthy living and increase access to physical activity, with children having an excellent understanding of healthy behaviours. However, we also know that parents are the main decision makers at home in terms of diet,
exercise, screen time and, most importantly, they are the main role models for children. So, to have a real and lasting impact on children’s behaviour – let’s get the parents on board too!

Our sessions are fun-filled, engaging and open to anyone who would like to attend. However, we would especially like to target families who you think would benefit most from a healthy living input. For example, children who may struggle to move around or get up off the carpet, children who have unhealthy packed lunches, and children where there are concerns about diet, physical activity levels or amount of screen time/gadget time at home.

We have different options available to suit your school, and can also offer tailor-made sessions. This is just a guide and our support is flexible so please contact us to arrange to have a chat about how we can support your school.

Here is some recent feedback:

Whitelaith Primary, Seacroft

“Just wanted to say a huge thank you for the excellent Change4Life cooking sessions that you delivered to our parents. Your manner was extremely approachable, which really helped our parents (who can be nervous) to settle in. You also gave our parents ownership of the course by asking them what they wanted to get out of it. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to link our 'Healthy School' priorities to our goals for engaging parents and the wider school community. As well as this, you were an extremely helpful source of knowledge when thinking about engaging parents further. The project seems to have made a great difference across the city and is valuable in helping change perceptions and habits with regards to parents and food in Leeds. We look forward to working with you again in the future.” Andrea Adamson, July 2018

Options include: -

Option 1: In-School Change4 Life Family Learning  (5-week programme, maximum group size 8 children and 8 parents)

Parents/carers and children come together during school time to learn healthy cooking and complete Change4Life activities in line with the Top Tips 4 Kids guide.  Home learning and family challenges will also be encouraged and celebrated.

Option 2: Afterschool Family Sessions  (5-week programme, maximum group size 30 children and 30 parents)

Children take part in an ACE afterschool club whilst the parents/carers of those children at the same time attend an adult Change4Life programme, which includes cooking, fun activities and healthy living information. Each session will focus on a different Change4Life theme, ensuring both parent/carer and child are getting the same healthy living message at the same time. Home learning and family challenges will also be encouraged and celebrated.
The final session brings parents/carers and children together to take part in fun activities and celebrate their learning and participation with a presentation of certificates.

Additional Support Available:

Change4Life Weekly Drop-In

While your school’s chosen input is running, parents/carers will have access to a weekly drop-in at school to discuss  on a 1-2-1 basis any healthy living issues that they may not feel comfortable discussing in a group setting.

We can support teaching staff on how best to talk to parents about healthy living and healthy weight to encourage signposting to this service.
