Early Years: Paediatric First Aid (2 day)

Paediatric First Aid from the Childcare Consultant Team at Leeds City Council.

Outline

Our two day certified Paediatric First Aid Training provides learners with the skills, knowledge and confidence to act effectively, particularly when it matters.

Learners are continually assessed throughout the training and will receive a practical handbook to work through during the course and keep for future reference. The course meets the minimum 12 hour requirements over 2 days which includes time for the final assessments. Please note our First Aid assessments of practical skills are undertaken on a 1:1 basis with a First Aid Instructor, not as a whole group assessment. Certificates are issued when the learner has completed the full course requirements.

We provide certified Paediatric First Aid training for the children’s workforce whether this is for registered provision or those not required to become registered with Ofsted such as nannies. Please note there are new requirements for newly qualified level 2 and 3 staff working in childcare settings, (refer to Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2017 (EYFS) paragraph 3.25 and footnote).

Description

The EYFS (2017), 3.25 states: ‘At least one person who has a current paediatric first aid certificate must be on the premises and available at all times when children are present and must accompany children on outings. Childminders and any assistant who might be in sole charge of the children for any period of time, must hold a current paediatric first aid certificate...Providers should take into account the number of children, staff and layout of premises to ensure that a paediatric first aider is able to respond to emergencies quickly’.

Providers can choose which organisation they wish to provide their first aid training. Our course follows the course outline of St John Ambulance and British Red Cross who are highlighted as 'standard-setters for currently accepted first aid practice', our certificates are for a full course consistent with the criteria set out in Annex A (EYFS 2017).

Comments from some of our delegates who work across childcare, education and school settings:
  • The best PFA course I have done….other PFA courses talked about adults with just bits about children.
  • A lovely relaxed supportive training session-no pressure applied and both tutors clarified and answered questions over the 2 days.
  • Mix of practical and theory, supportive, opportunities to ask questions, non-threatening environment created to support all delegates.
  • The tutors are very professional but made me feel at ease. I will go away with much more confidence than when I started the course.
  • Being tested individually makes you have to apply what you have been taught.
  • Great to have a course with tutors who know and understand childminding.

This course is relevant for practitioners working in any setting or school and provides detailed contextual information about undertaking first aid where children are present.
