Meeting the needs of children with SpLD and Literacy difficulties (Primary)

Outline

This 2 day course looks at key areas for primary schools in supporting pupils with dyslexia and literacy difficulties. The course builds school capacity building through:
  • Developing SENCo/subject leader knowledge of dyslexia
  • Appropriate assessment and target setting
  • Developing effective whole class strategies through quality first teaching
  • Coordinating SpLD (dyslexia) provision within school
  • Managing parental and pupil concerns around dyslexia

Description

Day One
This session studies the Rose Definition of Dyslexia and explores how this can help schools to identify specific difficulties individuals’ experience with dyslexia. Course Tutors demonstrate the use of relevant standardised and formative assessment and introduce an audit and action plan for the school around dyslexia

Day Two
This session explores good practice and provision for pupils with SpLD (Dyslexia) Course Tutors model strategies to promote inclusion in quality first teaching, look at intervention and consider how changes to policy and practice can have a positive impact on learners with dyslexia.
Delegates are given a toolkit and workbook to support the training and on-going good practice in school.

Outcomes

Through the training delegates will:
? Understand current definitions of Dyslexia
? Use current assessment to support the identification of pupils with SpLD (dyslexia)
? Be aware of intervention and support for pupils with SpLD (dyslexia) in Leeds
? Use the toolkit to audit current provision and develop an action plan to develop capacity and support for pupils with SpLD (dyslexia)
