SEMH Subject Leader Day: Mental Health & the Online World

Helping school staff navigate the mental health effects of the online world

Outline

This conference will bring school staff together to discuss the nuanced nature of the internet and the key Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) issues that surround it. In particular, how it can help – and hinder – children and young people’s ability to cope with their mental health. We're delighted that Children's Commissioner Anne Longfield will be delivering our keynote speech, with workshops from a variety of relevant and engaging professionals.

Description

In the 20 years since the dawn of social media and the 30 years since the internet became publicly available, the social climate, pressures and concerns for young people in our society have completely transformed. This is still very new territory in terms of research and the long-term effects of the internet and social media on people’s emotional health are largely unknown to us. What we can explore are the ways in which the online world can positively affect mental health as well as the most commonly reported SEMH issues in the online realm, with a focus on creating a whole-school approach to online safety/awareness.
